WHAT IS ESD?
By name it stands for "Electrostatic Discharge". As the name suggests it is the result of a charged object discharging the built-up charge that causes what is referred to ESD damage.
ESD Damage is best illustrated by a car door when we step out our car and go to lock the door - ZAP! The shock you get is due the charge we have built up as we rub against the seat. The metal door handle acts as a conductor for our charge and WHOOSH it discharges through the door handle.
An ESD event does not necessarily mean immediate failure of the device (Catastrophic failure), and the problem may not be noticed until your product reaches the end user (Latent defect). Your product's operating life may be greatly shortened.
Equally as worrying is the fact that latent damage is almost impossible to detect with the technology available today

The Electrostatics Society of America
The Electrostatics Society of America (ESA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1970 and devoted to the advancement of an improved understanding of the many phenomena related to electrostatics. The ESA provides a central forum for discussions between individuals interested in this diverse area of scientific study.

The ESD Association       Since it's founding in 1982 the ESD Association has grown to more than 2,000 members. This is a testimony to the widespread interest in these subjects and the need for such an organization. The Association is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting the exchange of technical information and high standards of professionalism among its members. Its primary field of interest is the advancement of the theory and practice of electrical overstress avoidance with an emphasis on the electrostatic discharge phenomena. Suggestions for improving this service are welcome.
